What Is the Challenge
A new social media challenge known as the Blackout Breath Challenge is spreading through schools across the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom. At least 47 students have been hospitalized in the past three months.
Why It Is So Dangerous
Dr. Sarah Chen, a pediatric neurologist, explains: When you hyperventilate and then hold your breath, you are depriving your brain of oxygen. Every time it happens, there is a risk of permanent damage.
- Falling injuries: Passing out means losing all muscle control
- Brain damage: Repeated oxygen deprivation can cause cumulative neurological harm
- Cardiac risk: In rare cases, the sudden drop in oxygen can trigger dangerous heart rhythms
- Seizure risk: Some students have experienced seizures after the challenge
This is not a game. Unconsciousness is a medical event, not entertainment.Advertisementblockquote>What Parents and Students Should Know
Schools are sending letters home and holding assemblies to warn students. If you or someone you know has participated in this challenge, seek medical attention even if you feel fine.
How to Get Help
